From Ruins to Radiance: The Novo Downtown’s Historic Revival in the Heart of Caldwell
A love story, a legacy, and a community brought back to life.
When you walk past the corner of Fox and Buck streets in downtown Caldwell, it’s hard to imagine that the elegant façade of The Novo Downtown was once a forgotten shell of history. For decades, the old mercantile store and movie theater sat silent — their walls weathered, their stories nearly lost to time.
But for lifelong Caldwell residents Pat and Tommy Novosad, those buildings represented something more than decay. They saw potential — not just for a structure, but for a new chapter in the town’s story.
This is that story.
The Dream That Started It All
Years ago, the Novosads purchased two neighboring properties downtown — one crumbling, the other little more than a façade. Where others saw ruin, they saw legacy.
Their dream was to preserve the soul of Caldwell’s past while creating a timeless gathering place for the future — a space where families could celebrate, couples could begin their lives together, and the community could reconnect in beauty and pride.
When Tommy passed away before the dream could be fully realized, Pat carried on with remarkable courage, determined to finish what they had started — a true labor of love built on faith, vision, and resilience.
A Restoration Years in the Making
As featured in the local news story, The Novo’s restoration became one of the most detailed historic projects in the area.
Every element was handled with precision and heart. When the original building’s structure was found to be unstable, the team carefully dismantled it — brick by brick — preserving each one for reuse. Over four years, the family, their builder Johnny Becka, and interior designer Allen Jancik worked tirelessly to reimagine the space, blending history and modern comfort seamlessly.
Today, those same preserved bricks line the walls of The Novo’s Main Hall and courtyard. The weathered paint of century-old advertisements still clings to the original brickwork — a subtle reminder of the craftsmanship and community that once filled these streets.

A Place for Celebration, Built from the Heart
The Novo Downtown isn’t just a venue; it’s a living piece of Caldwell’s heritage. Every event held within its walls continues the story of love, perseverance, and craftsmanship that brought it back to life.
Couples exchange vows where a movie house once stood. Families celebrate milestones beneath ceilings framed with restored beams. Guests gather in the courtyard beside bricks that have witnessed over a century of stories.
There’s a feeling here that can’t be replicated — a blend of history and heart that’s uniquely Novo.
More Than a Restoration — A Legacy
For the Novosad family, The Novo isn’t simply a business. It’s a tribute to Tommy’s memory and a gift to the community they’ve always called home.
As Pat once shared during the project, “This was never just about saving a building — it was about saving a piece of who we are.”
That spirit lives in every celebration that takes place here. From weddings and showers to corporate gatherings and community events, each one adds a new layer to the story — another moment of joy, connection, and history in motion.
